Do you want to own a legacy farm in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is the home of many expats and retirees, thanks to its enviable weather and quality of life. Costa Rica’s popularity has grown a great deal since the pandemic started, as many are seeking to escape winters forever and live on vacation permanently. For this reason, we have gathered a list of properties that possess all the right features for your ultimate Costa Rican living experience. If you are interested in experiencing rural Costa Rica, then check our list of 4 must-see farms in Costa Rica.

  1. Magical 21-Acre

Boasting a fairly uncommon workable topography amidst the mountainous nature of Manuel Antonio, this 21-acre property is a great investment, homesite for a Hacienda-style house, or parcel for residential development.

Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica’s most popular beach towns thanks to its unique combination of natural richness, first-class amenities, and eclectic, multicultural demographic.

However, over the years, Manuel Antonio has also become the ideal place for many to invest, live, and retire. As the demand for housing grows, these types of lots that offer space, privacy, and serenity away from the hustle-bustle of the town’s center become more coveted and less available.

The site has a plethora of amenities nearby, which makes it excellent for any type of residential development or touristic business. It is only 5 minutes from the Marina Pez Vela and Quepos town, 2 minutes from supermarkets and grocery stores, and 10 minutes from the world-famous Manuel Antonio National Park, the host of some of Costa Rica’s most renowned and beautiful beaches.

Being an exuberant mix of jungle and beach, the mountainous nature of Manuel Antonio has made it very difficult to find houses of one story only, as most terrains only allow for vertical expansion rather than horizontal. Under these circumstances, finding a lot with workable topography is a great value, and let alone 21 acres of it!

Being segregated into 17 total lots, the lots are also perfect for communities of cohousing or multigenerational families. There is plenty of room to build one-story houses, which don’t have the up-and-down intrinsic of two-level homes, something ideal for people in their retirement years and/or with disabilities.

Cohousing communities will also find in this lot an ideal space to create common areas like pools, jacuzzis, BBQ areas, and picnic grounds. Ultimately, it could also be the perfect Hacienda-style mansion with stables, pastures, and nurseries.

Overall, the property enjoys a privileged and enticing setting, with plenty of exotic flowers and plants in the landscape. The parcel neighbors several protected areas and features creeks throughout, making it a natural oasis for different species of wildlife.

2. 100-acre Reserva Lagunas

Reserva Lagunas is a 100-acre reserve blessed with impressive views, fertile soil, and lots of potential. Located just 15 minutes from Playa Dominical and less than one hour to Quepos and the Marina Pez Vela, the parcel represents a good opportunity to venture into the lodging business by building a hotel, or just have your own hacienda estate property with animals, fruits, vegetables, and beautiful views.

Thanks to its size, the estate is ideal for a ranch property. There are open hill-side pastures, which are ideal to have cattle or sheep. Horse stables for equestrian activities and plenty of land with fertile soil allow for a myriad of agricultural activities to take place, such as aquaculture, floriculture, horticulture, and silviculture.

The upper section of the parcel has road frontage which means that commercial ventures are viable. In this section, there are also prominent ridges that overlook the parcel, as well as more than 25 miles of whitewater coastline, and even the Manuel Antonio National Park in the distance.

The property also has walking and riding trails that are well maintained and in good condition, which help navigate the massive property better. There is also access to electricity, Internet, and formal water rights.

Reserva Lagunas is neighbored by two other reserves: the Guapil Reserve and the Baru Wildlife Reserve. Together, they make up close to 1000 acres of protected land surrounding the parcel, making it a nature sanctuary.

3. Finca Abundancia

Considered the best ranch property of the Central Pacific Coast, Finca Abundancia is a property comprised of 5 adjoining parcels that measure 567 hectares and lends itself to a plethora of uses including commercial and residential. Rolling hill pastures, mountainous and forest sections, and flat areas make this terrain ideal for livestock grazing, crop cultivation, and mixed-use real estate development.

It is located about 20 minutes from Quepos town, the home of the world-renowned Marina Pez Vela, and the most popular national park of Costa Rica: Manuel Antonio. Its strategic location makes it a great location for tourism ventures, as it is also fairly close to another popular tourist destination: Jaco.

The property is mostly fenced and features 5 structures, two corrals, a water system, feeders, caretaker’s residence, and it is accessible by 2WD through all-weather roads. There are several ridges the boast incredible views that reach all the way up to Punta Quepos.

Some of the highlights of this parcel include the fact that it neighbors a popular private reserve called The Rainmaker, where waterfalls, hanging bridges and hiking trails are the main attractions. There are springs and species of native trees planted, as well as agricultural areas designated for the cultivation of rice. Other commercial uses include hardwood farming, retreat or research centers, and even solar farming provided there is a substation nearby.

The property is owned debt-free and represents a very strong value in the area. The price was recently cut to half, pricing each acre at close to $1,800.

4. Organic Farm

For the ultimate Costa Rican experience, full of natural richness and environmental consciousness, the southern zone of Costa Rica a must-see. Measuring 530,000 sq.m. and consisting of pastured areas, logged forest, and regenerating forest, this parcel located near Golfito is rich in size, beauty, and resources.

The property includes two houses. The newer house is a two-bedroom layout, made of concrete, and built in the last 8–9 years. Moreover, there is also a caretaker’s house in the flat area of the farm.

Reforestation has been one of the key factors in the development of this land, with the owners planting a myriad of hardwood and fruit trees with high survival rates, including Spanish cedar, Glassywood, Fruta Dorada (Virola surinamensis: Myristicaceae), Kapok Tree, Tonka Bean Tree, Pink Poui (Savannah Oak) Cachimbo (Cristóbal), Wild Cashew, Gallinazo (Schizolobium parahybum), and Amarillon (Terminalia amazonia).

Many of these species are widely used for timber, which gives this farm a commercial advantage. The property has also piqued the interest of many research groups due to the existence of caverns that reach up to 40 ft in height and 100 ft. in depth and are the breeding, resting, and feeding ground for many bats.

The topography of the parcel is very varied, with different vantage points allowing for valley and mountain views. It lends itself to several uses; for example, a ranch with stables and animals, a cohousing community, a hacienda-style mansion, sustainability through the growth of organic fruits and vegetables, and even a research center.

The Golfito area is maturing and has become increasingly popular due to its natural setting, proximity to surfing beaches, and world-class sportfishing all year round. The construction of the Marina has made it popular with the yachting community in Costa Rica, and its proximity to the Panamanian border makes it very convenient.
